How To Get Rid Of Roaches In Your Raleigh Home

October 15, 2021

Some insects prefer to infiltrate the home in search of food or water. Others prefer to seek shelter or heat within the building’s inner walls. Still, others come sneaking into homes in search of everything they can take. Cockroaches in Raleigh are one such pest, relying heavily on human activity to secure a place to rear their young.

Here in Raleigh, there are four common roach species seen around residential and commercial buildings:

  • Oriental Cockroach
  • Brown-Banded Cockroach
  • American Cockroach
  • German Cockroach

The best way to identify a roach species is by its six legs, long antennae, and brown or grey patterns. Some roaches, including the German cockroach, have a pair of wings folded over the backs of their carapace. However, they are seldom, if ever, used.

Roaches are some of the most commonly seen species in North Carolina, and for a good reason. Coupled with higher than average rainfall, our humid summer seasons allow these pests to grow and thrive almost without slowing down.

To make matters worse, roaches are an extremely formidable pest. These insects run over 3.5 miles per hour, can hold their breath for 40 straight minutes and have been known to survive for weeks without food. If you have a roach infestation in the home, you may have some serious issues getting them back out.

The Many Dangers Of Raleigh Cockroaches

We don’t need to tell you just how dangerous roaches can be. Most of us already know that cockroaches are gross and spread many different pathogens from place to place. This is partially due to the places roaches prefer to hang out, including sewers, drain systems, dumpsters, and other areas of ill repute. This causes the bugs to pick up a copious number of pathogens before entering our homes, leading to infection risks and serious diseases.

Some of the most common illnesses spread by roaches include:

  • Salmonella
  • E. coli
  • Campylobacteriosis
  • Gastroenteritis
  • Dysentery

Getting roaches out of your home should be your top priority throughout the winter season and beyond.

Preventing Roach Infestations With Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Prevention

To avoid future cockroach infestations, rely on the following tips:

  1. Identify and seal any potential entry points, paying close attention to windows, doors, and the home’s foundations.
  2. Allow for proper food and trash storage around the house. Food should be kept in glass or plastic containers, while trash should be thrown into airtight bins lined with plastic wrap.
  3. Declutter your space often, removing boxes, packaging, and unused furniture as often as necessary.
  4. Clear away any yard debris that could be attracting roaches to your location, including compost piles, fallen leaves, mounded mulch, and more.
  5. Work on addressing moisture issues both inside and outside the home. Dehumidifiers can deal with indoor moisture problems, while outdoor potholes and other dips can be filled with bags of topsoil.
