What are mice?

Mice are small mammals that have oval or round-shaped bodies. The fur covering their bodies is brown or gray, while their bellies are generally lighter colored. Their ears sit up off their heads and, along with their tails, are covered in a light layer of velvety soft fur. Like all rodents, mice have continuously growing front incisors. Mice and other rodents are known for incessantly chewing on hard objects they come across to stop these teeth from overgrowing, which is a major issue when mice get into our homes.

Mice are nocturnal rodents. Identifying an infestation can be tricky at first because they are most active while we are sleeping. Knowing some of the most common signs of their presence is important in identifying an infestation quickly and eliminating them from your home.

Signs that mice have invaded your Raleigh home can include:

  • Discovering dark, rice-like droppings on the floors or in drawers or cabinets.
  • A sudden unpleasant, musty odor that develops in a certain area of your home.
  • Gnaw marks or holes in things like boxes, food containers, cabinets, or furniture.
  • Hearing running or scratching sounds in the evening behind your walls or in your ceilings.

Are mice dangerous?

Their small size leads many people to believe that these pests are more annoying than dangerous. The truth is that mice are dangerous to have living near people. Some of the biggest problems they create are listed below:

  • They chew on wires, pipes, and cables triggering short circuits, fires, and leaks.
  • On their bodies and in their saliva and excrement, they carry and spread a range of bacteria and pathogens that make people ill.
  • Mice will contaminate the food and surfaces of a home they are living in.
  • They cause damage to fabrics, furniture, rugs, and pillows as they gather materials to build their nests.
  • Their feces and excrement often trigger allergies and breathing problems.

Why do I have a mouse problem?

Mice, like most pests, are opportunistic. They live in areas that place them close to food, water, and shelter. Our Raleigh yards, homes, garages, and commercial properties provide them with everything they need to thrive. Mice are prolific breeders and will quickly take over any space they decide to call home.

Where will I find mice?

Mice are regular visitors to our Raleigh indoor and outdoor spaces. The two most common species to cause problems in our area are the house mouse and field mouse. Field mice prefer to live outdoors in fields, meadows, and our yards which provide them with dense vegetation and tall grass to hide in. House mice are more common in urban areas and have adapted to living indoors with people.

When mice find a way into your home, they will quickly find a dark, quiet hiding space to call home. We often discover mice and their nests in attics, chimneys, wall voids, crawl spaces, cabinets, and under furniture. Their small bodies and flexible skeletons allow them to move indoors through the smallest of spaces. Gaps under doors, damaged door or window trim, missing siding, and openings around utilities entering your home are common entry points.

How can I prevent mice in the future?

We have compiled a list of our most helpful tips to deter curious mice and keep them out of your Raleigh home.

  • Mice are always looking for a free meal. Eliminate their access to food by keeping lids on trash cans, picking up uneaten pet food, maintaining gardens, and keeping food prep and eating areas clean and free of food debris.
  • Store items like blankets, rugs, and other fabrics in plastic containers with tight-fitting lids to stop mice from getting into and damaging those items or using them as nesting materials.
  • Block their entry into your home by using weatherstripping, caulk, or other suitable materials to seal openings.
  • Make sure vents and chimneys have appropriate covers on them.
  • Avoid having your yard provide mice with hiding spots; keep the grass cut short, cut back shrubs, and remove leaf piles and other yard debris.
