What are spiders?

Spiders are arachnids and creatures that we regularly come across outside in our yards, wooded areas, and grassy fields. Spiders also regularly invade our homes, using them as a place to lay their eggs or hunt for their insect prey.

Spiders are predatory creatures that do us a favor by controlling the number of nuisance and dangerous insects living in our yards and gardens. However, they do us no good when they move into our homes and become unwanted guests.

We have compiled a list of the most common spiders you may come across in your Raleigh yard or home.

  • Black widow spiders
  • Brown recluse spiders
  • House spiders
  • Orb weave spiders
  • Wolf spiders

Are spiders dangerous?

In Raleigh, we do have dangerous spiders like brown widows and brown recluse spiders. Their danger lies in the fact that they have venom strong enough to cause harm to a person if a bite were to occur. Avoiding contact with these dangerous spiders is always best.

While dangerous spiders have given all spiders a bad rap, the truth is that most spiders you come across are harmless. These spiders may be able to bite you, but the venom they possess isn’t powerful enough to cause any harm to people.

Why do I have a spider problem?

If spiders have become a problem on your property, it is because it offers them plenty of food and plenty of places to rest and build their burrows or webs. Spiders only want to live in areas where there is plenty of prey for them to hunt. Our yards, gardens, trees, trash cans, and outdoor lights create gathering spots for many of the insects that spiders like to feed on.

Where will I find spiders?

Spiders like to live outside. Outdoor spaces provide them with everything they need. However, if their insect prey decides to move indoors, spiders have no choice but to follow them. Once inside, if your home offers them places to rest and insects to hunt, they are happy to stay and turn your house into their new home.

In our homes, spiders typically hang out in dark, quiet places that are generally humid, such as basements, crawl spaces, attics, kitchens, and bathrooms. Some area’s of our home where we regularly come across these leggy pests include:

  • Inside folded clothing or towels.
  • Inside bedding or blankets.
  • Inside cardboard boxes or other storage areas.
  • Under furniture.
  • In the corners of windows or doors.
  • In firewood or plant pots.

How can I prevent spiders in the future?

We have compiled a list of our most helpful tips to deter spiders and keep them out of your Raleigh, NC home.

  • Spiders are shy and reclusive; remove potential hiding spots from your yard by eliminating leaf piles, unnecessary woodpiles, and cutting back overgrown landscaping.
  • Remove standing water from your yard and keep lids on trash cans and recycling bins to make your property less appealing to the insects that spiders like to hunt.
  • Keep outdoor lights that attract insects off as much as possible. If insects are gathering near your home, so will the spiders that want to feed on them.
  • Stop spiders from easily entering your house by keeping windows and doors shut, making sure screens are intact, and placing weatherstripping around windows and doors.
  • Eliminate other potential entry points by keeping covers on vents, sealing cracks in the foundation, and repairing damaged siding or roof shingles.
  • Get rid of clutter from inside your home that provides hiding spots for spiders.
